The Sojourn Experience
Note: Sojourns are spirit-led, sacred journeys. The best way for me to describe the experience to you would be to tell (a brief part of ) the story from one of my Sojourns.
"Get in the car," the Medicine Man said. "We're going on Sojourn."
My brain stopped for a second. I had just locked the front door, cup of coffee in hand, and was about to get into my car and drive the 30 minutes to work.
I only lived a few houses away from my teacher, but he'd never shown up at my place this early.
"Um, I was just about to go to work..." my mouth managed to say.
"Call in. We're leaving in 10 minutes."
There was something sacred about Sojourn. It was an energy that came without warning, precisely when it was needed. Sojourn didn't care if you had a job, or family matters, or plans. It didn't care about what you liked, disliked, or preferred. To be quite frank (and it often was), it didn't care about your ego.
The only thing Sojourn cared about was your soul.
The magic had struck and was already working. I could feel it. I called into work and let them know I couldn't make it today.
"Are you sick?"
"No," I said. "Something came up."
"No problem, when will you be back?"
"I don't know," I said. "I'll let you guys know."
That kind of conversation simply didn't happen at my work. They liked to know things weeks in advance. And even then, you might not get the time off. But on Sojourn, things always worked out.
There was that time we ended up at Serpent's Mound in Ohio. We arrived on a Friday afternoon, a time when you'd expect there to be tourists wandering around, or at least people manning the entry booth or the on-site shop. But when we arrived, it was silent. There wasn't a soul around.
And so we left the sidewalks and walked the sacred mounds. We sat for hours meditating, connecting, and journeying to forgotten times. We gathered at the serpent's head and I was asked to perform the Pipe Ceremony. And just before we began, an Indian walked out of the woods and joined us. Where he came from, I don't know. But he shared the energy with us, and afterwards, walked back into the surrounding woods.
We spent a few more minutes sitting, and then all of a sudden, the energy changed.
"It's time to go."
We gathered our things and made our way back to the parking lot. As we got in the car, a line of 15 vehicles pulled in.
Strange things happen on Sojourn. When I asked the Medicine Man about it, he told me that it put us "out of sync" with the rest of the world. We weren't walking in what he called "white man's time", we were just outside of that in a timestream that was open to magic.
Foxes would show up in the middle of a city. Bats would circle our heads in the middle of the day. Animals and other messengers, both seen and unseen, would join us on our path. The energy of Sojourn took you where you needed to go. Power spots, vortices, sacred ground, chance encounters, the forest, the wild, or even the French Quarter in New Orleans. Whatever your soul needed to grow, Sojourn would take you there.
It was late Spring in Texas when the Medicine Man showed up. I grabbed my swimtrunks and a coat. Shorts, jeans, flip-flops, and hiking shoes. It wasn't my first Sojourn, and I wanted to be as prepared as possible.
It had taken me 5 minutes to call off work and pack, and we had 5 minutes to spare.
"Get me one of those cups of coffee. I'll be in the car."
I pressed him a cup of my famous brew, and a few minutes later, I was sitting in the driver's seat. I turned the car around, drove down the driveway, and approached the road.
"Which way," he asked me, testing my sensory.
I closed my eyes for a moment and felt for it... Sure enough, the Beacon was there.
"That way," I pointed. "Feels like north-north east."
I got a nod and maybe a hint of a smile.
I pulled out of the driveway and started heading north-north east.
And so the adventure began...

Your experience of life can be a never-ending adventure. In fact, I would say that the experience of adventure is precisely why you chose to come to this planet. And if that's missing, all you have to do is let go. Let go of the rules, the hows, the fears, the doubts, and KNOW that if you'll just listen to your soul, it will guide you into a life beyond your wildest dreams. That's the life you're meant to live. Your soul wants that for you.
And so do I.
Sojourns are typically reserved for our Mystery School students, though exception can be made in rare cases. If this is something that calls to you, contact Nagendra.
